ABSTRACTAre diamond like carbon (DLC) coatings a panacea for tribology contacts? |

Diamond like carbon (DLC) coatings in principle offer the prospect of sustained low friction
and wear resistant surfaces for oil lubricated engineering devices like cam-lifters, bearings and
gears. However, the up-take of such coatings, despite extensive R&D efforts, has not been
as widespread as initially anticipated by many experts. This paper examines the potential failure
mechanisms of DLC coated components that are life-limiting and how these might be mitigated.
